Bluetooth 4.0 specs are here: low power Bluetooth chips on their way
Even if not many Bluetooth 3.0 devices (if any) have hit market, Bluetooth SIG has finalized the specs for the next generation Bluetooth 4.0 devices, which focus more on the low power consumption (which we’ve talked previously) mode then on performance or range. As I read the news it become clear to me that Bluetooth 4.0 is meant to work together with 3.0 chips by automatically detecting changes and switching from a low power mode to a high power one (for fast transfers, depending on requirements).
You will also see only Bluetooth 4.0 devices with no dedicated Bluetooth 3.0 chips, as there’s no need for high power/high throughput mode for gadgets like Bluetooth stereo headsets or GPS receivers, who just need a steady flow of data to update regularly. The new Bluetooth 4.0 trasfer protocol will be especially good for things like medical devices and home entertainment peripherals (remote controls for example) which will use coin sized batteries and operate for years without needing a replacement.
