Bluetooth 4.0 specs finalized, says Bluetooth SIG
We’ve told you about Bluetooth 4.0 quite a few times here, but now it’s time to take things ‘officially’, as Bluetooth SIG, the consortium that deals with this standard’s specs has announced that the final specs for Bluetooth 4.0 are finalized. As we’ve mentioned a few months ago, the Bluetooth 4.0 standard focuses mainly on improving battery life, one of the main drawbacks of this small range wireless transfer protocol.
Range is also increased to 200 feet, but power consumption is the main focus, so we’ll be able to buy Bluetooth 4.0 enabled devices with a runtime of a few months from a small watch battery. This was made possible for devices which don’t need to transfer large amounts of data, but need to do updates at regular time intervals. Expect your average smartphone to get better battery life with Bluetooth activated, but don’t expect miracles when you transfer large amounts of data very often.
The final Bluetooth 4.0 specs will be sent to manufacturers in June, this year, and first devices are expected to ship to customers sometime before the end of the year. Bluetooth SIG predicts that the first smartphones with Bluetooth 4.0 will appear sometime in Q2 2011. Till then, we’ll keep you posted.
