Bluetooth device as a security tag? Nio just did that
Imagine this scenario: you are in a crowded place and want to get home safe, without your gadgets being stolen from your purse or backpack. Besides the obvious “look after you stuff” there are elegant solution to ensure you don’t get rifled. Imagine all your devices have bluetooth capabilities enabled and a central device that you wear close to you alerts once one of your devices gets too far from you.
Nice is a manufacturer who just launched a product that functions using the principle described above. You first pair any bluetooth gadget you have (that allows software installation) to your nice Security Tag and then set the sensitivity zone (from low 25 meters to high 1 meter), which tells the device when to alert you. Also motion sensing options and automatic sensitivity settings for different time intervals are possible.
There’s even a locate function that makes the paired device emit an SOS signal, disclosing its position. All this comes for a pretty expensive 78$, but I expect prices to go down after other manufacturers take and improve on this idea. I mainly would like to see a possibility to pair the Security Tag with any device by using some kind of bluetooth transmitter plus a way to ensure you don’t forget your Nio Security Tag somewhere.
Till then take a look at a short review of this device on Engadget.
