Bluetooth versions and adapter types

Author: John Pope

I don’t know if you know, but if two devices have Bluetooth technology it doesn’t mean they’ll be able to communicate between them. In order for this to be possible both devices must have compatible Bluetooth technology versions and to have installed the same Bluetooth profiles that define the actions that can be done between the two devices.

Bluetooth Adapter types:

  • Class 1 – 100m maximum transmission range – 100 mW (20 dBm) maximum permitted power for emiter
  • Class 2 – 10m maximum transmission range – 2.5 mW (4 dBm) maximum permitted power for emiter
  • Class 3 – 1m maximum transmission range – 1 mW (0 dBm) maximum permitted power for emiter

Bluetooth versions

  • Bluetooth 1.0 and 1.0B – old technologies with many bugs, not used anymore
  • Bluetooth 1.1
  • Bluetooth 1.2 – 1Mb/s transmission rate
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR – 3Mb/s transmission rate
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • Bluetooth 3.0
