Low power Bluetooth chips to be integrated into Smart Grids

Author: John Pope

Do you know Smart Grids? The project that US government will implement in people’s homes in form of an electric network to help monitoring power consumption and optimize the way energy is being consumed? It’s an eco project that might help US become less power hungry but I think they ought to fight on multiple plans to really see a difference.

Bluetooth SIG, the organization that’s responsible for the Bluetooth standard, announced they fully support Smart Grids and are working on low power Bluetooth chips that will help users monitor what happens in their home through their wireless gadgets. Imagine you’re sitting on a sofa, watching TV and an alert about an open light in the kitchen is transmitted to you by SMS or via Bluetooth.

Couple this to systems that automatically shut down lights and unused appliances with help from motion sensors and you have a semi automated system with less chance to fail (waste power in this case) than a fully manual or automated model. Bluetooth SIG didn’t say when the new chips will be available, but I bet it will all depend of Smart Grids implementation.
