Transform an iPod into an iPhone via Bluetooth with a watch phone

Author: John Pope

First, let’s see what the title means. It’s a simple question: can you turn an iPod Touch into a fully fledged iPhone by connecting it via Bluetooth with a watch phone? It’s something many wondered if it is possible, mainly because it’s pretty attractive to buy a cheaper iPod than an iPhone, which also must be purchased with a monthly plan.

What should be connected to an iPod Touch and why?

As you might have seen there are a lot of cell phone watch models on market today (I anticipate this being one of the trends of the year and next year’s also) and almost all of them have Bluetooth compatible chips. It’s pretty obvious why: it’s uncomfortable to use a watch phone for calls holding your hand in the air, next to the ear.

That’s why almost all watch phones can (and must) be connected via Bluetooth to some sort of headset (mono or stereo). In the case of the iPod Touch, a more advanced device it’s hard to use it as a speaker as it’s not meant to be, but….

The Remote SIM solution

Let’s not loose hope and think of the Remote SIM function that allow an external device, connected to a phone via Bluetooth to control it (make/answer calls, use its own address book etc). If you watch phone has Remote SIM capabilities (check with the manufacturer first) then you might be able to use it with an iPod Touch application and call/answer, do all the things you do from the MP3 player with the 3.5 inch widescreen, not from the tiny 1.2 inch LCD of the watch.
