The Bluetooth 3.0 +HS brings a lot of improvements that are not only looking to increase the transfer speed, one of the weak points of Bluetooth wireless technology. The most notable new feature is the “Alternate MAC/PHY” which allows Bluetooth to act as a discovery and link creation protocol while the actual data transfer (when large amounts of data need to be transfered) is made via a much faster WiFi connection. In this way Bluetooth is used when connection is Idle to take advantage of its low power consumption and then, when data needs to be transfered WiFi kicks in with its lower power per transmitted bit consumption.

Other improvements of Bluetooth 3.0 + HS aim at increasing security of connections. More technical info can be found here, if you want to get your hands dirty.
